Izakaya Roku’s three-colored rice bowl is so-so. The rice is too much for normal, so I recommend a little less.
It is 11:40 on a weekday, and while I was walking around wondering whether I should go to Noel or Kobushi today, I spotted a sign near Kobushi that said Izakaya Roku was having lunch.

The name of the pub is Roku. I remembered that there was a line up on the stairs when I was returning from Kobushi yesterday. Attracted by the Kaisen Sanshoku-don (three-color bowl of rice topped with seafood) written at the top of the signboard menu, I went in to give it a try.
The restaurant is on the second floor up the stairs, but I could see some of the crowds inside from outside on the first floor. When I entered the restaurant, it was small inside, and about 50% of the customers were there. The kitchen is staffed by two men in charge of cooking and one woman in charge of the hall.
I guess the male cook is a part-timer. He has slightly long hair and piercings. I realized here that I cannot expect the taste of the food, because I think it is impossible for me to have anything other than short hair in a restaurant.
- A 12-course set for only 500 yen. Saturday lunch bento in Shinjuku 6-chome, Kikuya, bento shop on Medical Boulevard
I sit down at the counter and order the Kaisen Sanshoku-don (seafood three-color bowl) for 1,000 yen. They ask me how much rice I want, so I leave it at normal. There are two other choices: less or more. Chopsticks and a paper towel are already set on the table. No pitcher of water. They serve oolong tea over the counter. A rather large glass.
The counter seats about seven, and there are about three tables. The counter is quite small, with chairs almost bumping into each other. Right now, one seat is open, but I think it will be very cramped when the restaurant is full.
The seafood sanshoku-don (three-colored bowl of rice topped with seafood) arrived in 5 minutes and 57 seconds after I ordered. It comes with several small bowls of food, and the sanshoku-don is quite hearty, with white fish, tuna, and salmon roe on top.
Using chopsticks to move the seaweed out of the way, one can see that this large volume of rice is rice. The rice is quite heaped up. There is not a lot of seafood, which is the important thing. The amount of seafood would not be commensurate with this amount of rice. I think there will be a lot of rice left over.
I proceeded to eat it while putting wasabi on it. The seafood is so-so. At least better than Yoshikame Sushi. The soy sauce is in a small dish, which makes it a little difficult to eat. I prefer to douse the top of the plate with soy sauce.
The amount of rice is too much compared to the seafood, so you have to keep a good balance between the rice and the seafood or you will end up with nothing but rice. I finished my meal well and left the restaurant.
The other set menus, such as the Kakuni and Karaage set menus, also looked good and were not too expensive, so I decided to try them next time. Other than the cramped seating, the food tasted okay.
